I found the earliest known video of Susan Boyle singing in a singing competition at Fir Park Social Club in Motherwell. The competition was in 1984 when Susan Boyle was a sultry 23 years old. She is singing the Barbara Streisand hit “The Way We Were”. Its an interesting video because its not professionally done and you see Susan Boyle walking up to the stage to take the microphone. While you can tell from the video that Susan had developing talent even back then, what struck me the most was that for 1984 she isn’t bad looking. She actually looks somewhat pretty. After I saw her on Britain’s Got Talent, I got this image in my head that she looked big and frumpy her whole life. I think this was in part to her admission that she had never been on a date and had never been kissed by a man her whole life. Looking at her in 2009, its not hard to imagine why she had never been kissed, but looking at the cute but shy 23 year old Susan Boyle its astonishing that she was never kissed or never asked out on a date.
I think you will also notice in the video that Susan Boyle’s fashion and figure are not bad considering this is from 1984. Her skirt, blouse, and hair are all total 1980’s which tells me that she was with the times. I won’t say she was fashion forward, but she was with the times. She took care of herself. Why didn’t anyone kiss this woman with such a beautiful voice??? This is the question I hope will be answered as we find out more and more about this unusual and interesting character.
