by ash on May 21, 2009

Since Susan Boyle has said that Elaine Paige is her inspiration for building a singing a career, I thought it would be interesting to hear from the readers of the susanboylevideos.net blog about who they think sings the “I dreamed a dream” song better. Leave your comments about who is better. I will pick a random commenter after one week of the publishing of this post and send you $25 via Paypal.

For me there is no comparison, Susan Boyle performance of the song I dreamed a Dream is definitely much better than Elaine Paige’s. I think personally that when she sings it she is living the song and gives it such a wealth of emotion that is rarely seen these days. You feel the emotion she sings with and she has the best singing voice I have heard in my lifetime no matter what she sings she is equally as good singing Cry me a River in 1999 for a charity Cd the link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=iv&hl=en&v=aZoraCG3b6s&gl=US&annotation_id=annotation_721040.
I cannot wait for her first Cd to be released.

I had never heard of Elaine Paige until Susan Boyle came along, and so I thought I would youtube Elaine Paige. No disrespect to Elaine Paige, but Susan sang “I dreamed a dream” much, much better. She sang it with all her heart, while Elaine sounded like she could care less about the song. I think that Susan is a wonderful singer and sings with such emotion, it is just so touching. I cried when I heard her sing and at how she wowed the audience after the shameful way they acted, and the judges too. Long live Susan and her beautiful voice!

When Susan sang, you could literally see the gentle beauty of her soul shine on her face. Every word she sang as just an ‘average woman’ touched me; I could relate to it. Dreams killed by life: Absolutely! Been there, too!
Elaine Page, whom I had never heard of, being American, I suppose, has a beautiful and classically trained voice. But I felt her performance of Fantine was a little too theatrical for the character. Fantine is not a erudite woman, she’s a commoner. The song should not ‘lilt’ of pensive reflection. I felt Elaine spoke the lyrics a tad too much; it almost seemed like she was having trouble with her breath control. Fantine would not have had the Mona Lisa smile; Fantine was abandoned, used and sad. Susan sang it, having known meanness and unkindness and youth gone. I felt it, every word of it.
Thank you, Susan.

Susan Boyle has much more powerful voice. I would say her voice is geared more for bringing people to tears in a concert format. Elaine Paige’s voice is good and geared toward a Broadway show. I think overall Susan Boyle is a better singer. Its hard to gauge accurately though because we haven’t seen much variety from Susan Boyle. She has done one song and done it well, but it doesn’t mean she will hit a home run with every other song she sings. I will just say that I think I like Susan Boyle’s version of I dreamed a dream much better than Elaine Paige’s. Looking forward to hearing more from Susan Boyle on Britain’s Got Talent.

I agree with what others have stated. Susan sang the song from her own experience and emotion. It touched the whole world, it is one of the most remarkable phenomenons that I have seen in my lifetime and to think that only a few years ago this world wide overnight fame could not have been possible in the same way. The internet has literally changed everything. Susan is the people’s choice and of her own merit, not the hype of a well oiled, well heeled ad campaign, the sheer force of her talent and simple charm made the world fall in love with sweet Susan and her beautiful voice. We get to see a real life fairy tale. Susan definitely IMHO is the better singer of this song.

Hands down, SUSAN!

No question for me, Susan’s voice is much better. Elaine’s is good, don’t get me wrong, but it just doesn’t compare!

I have never been touched so deeply by any singer. Susan Boyle is by far outstanding! Susan’s talents are so God inspired and she is a blessing to the world. Susan gives all of us the hope to believe the Cinderella dream and to never give up.

By far Susan Boyle is much better for she sings with her whole heart and soul

Donna, Erika, and Gigi. You guys are so right about Susan Boyle. She has an amazing God given voice. Like an angel singing for all of eternity. I really do cry each time I listen to her and watch her videos. She is an inspiration for us to really go after our dreams.

Every time I hear Susan’s voice, I can’t help but be move to tears. It’s a shame she didn’t get top prize. In my opinion, she’s the real winner. I would have loved to hear her sign Hero from Mariah Carey. Now that would have been something! I’m still going to support her. Hopefully she gets a recording out soon. She’s absolutely amazing.

Hi Delissa. I think Diversity is a great Dance troupe and I agree with the judges that their dance was flawless (and way better than the great Flawless group). Unfortunately, I think the public made a grave error in not voting Susan Boyle as the winner of the show. What I don’t understand though is why Susan decided to sing the same song she sang in the tryouts, I dream a dream from Les Miserable. I liked her rendition of the song better during the tryouts. I felt like she didn’t convey enough passion in the Final’s performance to win over the voting public.

I must say that Diversity’s scorpion at the beginning of their routine was very unique.

I really dislike the way Elaine sings this song, she is very clipped in her delivery, and I think that she puts no emotion, feeling or soul into it. Whereas Susan’s is just sublime, she takes you to another place where your soul is affected, a true and rare gift. I think if Susan had sung Cry me a River, the best rendition of to be made she would have won BGT. However, in a way I am glad she didn’t, the pressure would have been relentless and overpowering and we have seen what it has done to her up to now. All her fans know that she will have a fantastic musical future, she really is a unique person and artist. I for one cannot wait to buy her CD. I just hope she has the right people around her advising and taking care of her, I have worked in the music business and know how cut throat it can be.

The winners Diversity were amazing and what a wonderful bunch of young guys! Real role models for the younger generation. I thought they were out of this world. Congratulations to them and looking forward to watching them on TRVP.

Susan I dreamed a dream and you were number one in the charts, a dream that will come true, sending love and best wishes for a healthy, happy, successful life ahead of you. Love you!!!

Hi Bea. I totally agree with you on Susan’s final performance. It didn’t feel genuine like it did the first time. I didn’t feel the same emotion like I do every time I hear her original rendition of “I Dreamed A Dream”. You could tell that she wasn’t fully into the performance and was so overwhelmed by the whole experience. I think now that the show is over and she has a record company (Simon’s) standing behind her and providing not just musical mentors but also people who will help her stay strong emotionally, I think she will be ok. This sudden change of becoming an overnight sensation would be difficult for anyone. I think she handled it very well. I would probably breakdown to know the world is criticizing me and wants a piece of me at the same time.

Diversity was excellent and I’m a fan. No doubt they will inspire youth around the world to go after what they want and never give up. Thanks for visiting Bea.

Susan Boyle over Elaine Page, hands down. I’m moved to tears every time that I listen to Susan sing. Waiting until she comes to America and looking forward to a CD so that I can hear her sing anytime. Love you, Susan!

Susan over Elaine on this one.

However Ruthie Henshall is the best performer of this song. See:

My wife told me about Susan Boyle about two months ago and last night I took a peak at her preformance at Cats what a surprise . There is only one word to describe her preformance BRILLIANT she has the voice if a godess I had tearse in my eyes listening to this woman. Elaine will bow to Susan, she is absolutely in harmony with the portraing of the songs she sings. Susan you received a God given talent that should have been discovered years ago I thank the Lord that you came forward even at such late stage in your life.

Susan Jeffery 08.31.09 at 8:32 am

I love the way Susan Boyle sang it for the judges first time. I also think that Ruthie Henshall on 10th Anniverary Les.Mis. sings it with so much feeling – it is so wonderful to listen to.
